In Watership Down, the foxes have their own language. Sometimes it's hard to understand exactly what's what. Here's a helpful dictionary to aid you in reading and writing all things Watership.
- A: Male, dog fox (Used iu name. For example, A-Ho)
- A-O: Sexless Fox form right at the beginning and brought the foxes into existance by giving birth. (Slightly different ways of how rabbit worship Frith, could be the same, though more needs to be studied about this.)
- Bakheha: Hello.
- Beklodia: What do you want?
- Cle-am: 'Long hot wind which shaped the Earth'.
- Ea: Yes.
- Eo: No.
- Face: Land covered with concrete, brick and asphalt.
- Frashoon: Summer Winds.
- Gaklaped: Hare.
- Gaklopid: Rabbit.
- Gerflan: Land forbidden, i.e. Not their territory, etc.
- Gibbins: Food....killed by humans, then left.
- Groff: Giant sent by man, evil thing of imagination.
- Hav: The land (Not with concrete ... forest or field)
- Havnot: Where man lives.
- Homog: Word used to annouce something as dumb. Also used as a description word for dog.
- Kakhook: Goodbye
- Longtrekker: Same a Hlessi. A fox who wanders from place to place.
- Melloon: Autumn Winds.
- O: Female, vixen. (Used as name. For example; O-ho)
- Ords: Foxes that stay very near home.
- Perfect Here: Fox heaven.
- Rangfar: The gypsies of foxes.
- Ransheen: Winter winds.
- Ranz-san: Suicide by tearing your own stomanch out with your teeth.
- Scresheen: March Winds.
- Sowanders: Holy places where the ground had been soaked in martyrs, (where fox could cross, but not stay.) basically, where another fox has died.
- Stayner: Opposite of Hlessi....stationary fox I guess, like an ord. Gerflan - Heff -(it says in one part, "for the relative safety of the gerflan, which ran in strips over the whole country,"...don't think it's always forbidden...) start of chapter 6, "not usually frequented by man".
- Stoad: Elderly fox who deserves respect.
- Switter: Spring Winds.
- Unremembered Fear: Rabies.
