If anything were ever secret, Shade’s origins would be it. There is only one rabbit alive who was there, and Shade is it. There has been speculation that even he may not remember.

Shade first arrived at Malus at about six months of age, and quickly found his way into the Militia. He fought in several battles against rival warrens before he joined the Owsla under Alsike-Rah. After the training, he was placed into the Kasrabral division of the Owsla as one of that division’s few fighters.

Shade’s power there was considerable, but he was not allowed to make decisions without the approval of higher authority. This made his abilities away from the warren limited: he could command any rabbit to obey pre-set orders, but could not adapt them to what he saw if, for instance, there were additional enemies or perhaps some prisoners. For that reason, he switched divisions and fought his way up standard Owsla ranks to become a Raid Captain.

When Alsike-Rah was killed and Panax came to power, Shade also received a bloody promotion: he killed Alsike’s son under order of Panax-Rah, and assumed the position of Raid Leader. Then, using his history as a spring-board, he transferred back into the Kasrabral as his equal rank, Nahlmark (similar in meaning to Fanatic). This position gave Shade what he had been missing as a Kasrabral fighter, and is the highest “active” (fighting) rank available.
