When asked about her life before arriving at Nepenthes, Mallothi will most often answer cryptically that she "grew up as a hlessi." In truth, she was the young, self-appointed leader of a band of rabbits that left their stuffy and rather oppressive home warren without leave, off looking for mischief and whatever adventure they could find in the distant green lands beyond their limited horizons. Misfortune after misfortune befell the small party, as storms, terrors, and encounters with elil picked away at their numbers, until only Mallothi herself was left. For several months now she has been on her own, and looks upon the experience as one that forced her into a grim adulthood.
At the best of times she is quiet and contemplative, but if annoyed or provoked by too much meddling chatter, she is inclined to be curt, indifferent or even surly. A large doe, she is completely aware of her body's capacity, and will not hesitate to fight if she believes the situation calls for it. Her pelt is a uniform grey-brown, "like muddy rainwater" as she sometimes describes it. Her eyes are a dark brown, hooded and often brooding.
